The Littlest Patriot
by Betty Baker Bailey

The littlest patriots lay in their graves
Without any fanfare; without any names
Their voices extinguished before they could speak;
Their little lives stolen while they were yet weak.
Though few of us know them, we must hold them dear.
For they are the soldiers who've died in the war
For the rights of the helpless; life at its core.

Let us take up our roses to place on their graves.
Then let's take from the beast their blood that it craves.
By speaking the truth and demanding a change;
Replacing those leaders whose values estrange
Us from our children; our hearts from the truth
We'll return to the nation we were in our youth.
For life for the children is life for us too,
Since we are all children when we are all new.
