This is Surgeon Joseph Bruner holding hands with 21-week old Samuel Armas. Samuel indicates not just awareness, but personality.

Samuel was diagnosed with spina bifida. His mother, an obstetrics nurse, was familiar with Dr. Bruner's procedure. To the delight of all concerned the surgery was successful and little Samuel was born on December 2, 1999.

In Samuel's mothers' words, "The photo reminds us ... pregnancy isn't about disability or illness, it's about a little person."   Exactly.
